Halloween 2013!

A pumpkin (he insisted on being last year's), Captain America, and a red power ranger!

I had to take advantage of one last year of pregnancy costumes :)

I love watching two year old figure out the miracle of Halloween- you just walk up to strangers and they give you candy? What? Probably not the best stranger danger training- just saying-

Back to School!

Summer is officially over in our house! Caden started first grade today!

These pictures were supposed to be a bit more organized...but getting everyone out the door for a family drop off at 7:25 proved to be a little more effort than I planned!

First day lunch...I've been planning to up my lunch making game all summer. It was the one thing I couldn't stand doing a single day more by the end of last year. I've got some fun bento supplies in stock now that should make lunches funner for the kids tolerable for me. ;)

Walking in...

At Caden's desk. Side note...your child's desk on a super crowded and busy first day of school is probably not appropriate for a family portrait...but I got a little carried away. Doesn't Caden look ready for us to get out of there?

First day pics of this year and last year. Look at them growing up! Sigh-

Survivor Watch Party

I have three small children.
They keep my very busy from dawn till dusk.
...but at dusk every night a small magical window opens
between about 7:45 when they go to sleep and 9:45

And that is when we catch up, do chores, prepare for the next day
and often watch our favorite shows
Except on Wednesday, which is the best, because that is:
Survivor Night!

Enter our really amazing friend, Clay
who just so happens to know Reynold from this season of Survivor
and who just so happened to pass along to us some info
about a Charitable Viewing Party going on
this week in Austin
where Reynold and Eddie and Malcolm
would be at a viewing party

Trying to play it cool talking to Reynold and Eddie
What? Seriously?
So we just had the absolute amazing opportunity to go to a bar
and hang out with those crazy guys
and watch them as they watched
one of the best episodes unfold...

What's even cooler is that the party room we were all in
was tiny...like 50 people
and a bunch of them were family members of the players
We were sitting next to Malcolm's cousin and his girlfriend

Posting this picture makes me a stalker, but its so funny how you can see half our faces beneath the "fans" sign and Malcolm, Eddie, and Reynold are in the foreground
Before the show came on everyone was mingling around and even though you'd imagine these
guys must be sick of people wanting to talk to them
they actually came up to us!
Eddie walked in first and walked right up to our table
and introduced himself...which is totally weird
because he's like, "Hey, I'm Eddie..."
and you are thinking
"yeah, I know....I've been watching you in HD TV for like 8 weeks"
but instead you say
"nice to meet you. are you staying long in Austin?'
And stuff like that

So then Malcolm just walks up to Collin and I
And stay at our table and starts chatting

Malcolm was trying to call his mom so she can get directions to the restaurant, but it was dead
so I offer to let him use mine, I know, I'm nice like that
but he can't use it because he doesn't know her actual phone number
Note to self: Must teach boys importance of knowing my actual phone number when they are grown up
So we asked him about the Q&A they were planning to do.
He says they cancelled it because they get in so much trouble for discussing anything about the show. But we snuck in a few...
I got to ask him about how much of the conversations get missed by the cameras
He emphatically said that there are literally cameras rolling every single moment. There is a crew member who stays up nights just filming them sleeping.

Collin joked with him and asked him if he'd play again. He said they had discussed it, but wasn't sure because it was just so hard on your body. I thought about telling him I had the same concerns about having a fourth baby...didn't think that would quite hit home to a single guy...but it is TOTALLY a legit comparison!

Collin asked him about what his application video was like...
In case you are dreaming of applying...
he said he literally just filmed himself walking around his apartment talking and talking
he said the most important thing to them is the ability of a person to be able to tell a story
so make sure you emphasize that on your next video

Malcolm giving Collin advice on getting on the show :)
Collin is still forbidden to sleep in a hut besides bikini clad 19 year old girls
(and tonight was probably the closest he will ever get to the show)
shh....don't tell him...

I know, this video is a something a stalker would make, but I was so surreal
Malcolm is standing there right next to me watching himself on the show-
this was right before they found the miraculous immunity idol

So here are my final thoughts on meeting these characters in person...
-they are completely characters, all three of them are the kind of extroverted personality that walk into a crowded room and immediately work the crowd
-it makes sense that those are the types of people that get casted for the show- large personalities + all together = good tv
-they are huge, literally, giants. I cannot imagine competing against them in physical challenges. they really are just bigger than you imagine. Somehow even Malcolm's head seemed giant.
-the entire conversation we had with Malcolm reminded me of 7th grade. You know that one boy in the school who charmed all the girls so much that be the end of one conversation each girl was utterly convinced that the boy liked them especially? (In my grade this was Michael Gonzales?) Thats Malcolm. I can totally imagine having a strategic Survivor conversation with him and being 100% convinced he was in an alliance with me when he could very well be 100% about to vote me off. Its not that he's intentionally schmoozing you, he's just one of those genuinely Charismatic kinds of people

Which brings me to how amazing it was to watch these guys as the most incredible episode unraveled....

Tribal council part one

Tribal council part two

Final thoughts?
This is actually the best part which is that all three of those guys seemed to be legitimately nice guys. Yay Survivor!

We came home to a house full of wide awake, adorable little boys.
And it was imminently clear to me that despite our night of being star struck and having fun, and of course imagining what it would be like to do a show like that
there is absolutely 100% nothing that compares to the blessings we have been given for the adventures that we are getting to live every day

Caden and the Principal's Breakfast Award

Caden (6 years) with Principal Caddy

This morning Caden was recognized at the Principal's Breakfast Ceremony :)

Each teacher gets to nominate two students for the year and they come to the library for a breakfast and get to receive an award from the principal of the school for being recognized.

Sweet Caden.
When the school year started I was worried about the influence of teachers and students I did not know that would be with him more hours of the day that I am on weekdays.
Would he learn bad words, bad behaviors?
This little one can't help it, he is a first born at heart.
He hasn't broken a single rule the entire year.
The teacher and kids in his class have vouched for it, not me.

Its just in his heart to obey, to listen, to follow the rules.
There have been tears of frustration over why the rest of his class won't obey too.
Followed by many discussions about how the rest of the world
doesn't always do the right thing just because you do.
And many reminders that doing your best is what counts.

I'm so proud of my little guy.
He is the sweetest, most tender hearted, gentle yet serious, soccer loving, rule following, boy.

Rodeo Rumble….

There is nothing better than a visit from our cousins for the weekend…
except a visit from our cousins AND a trip to the rodeo!

Austin moms…
Do you know about the rodeo rumble?
You register your kids to run a 1K around the rodeo arena. They get a number, ice cream, and a cow bell. Your whole family gets free parking and free admission to the fairgrounds that day! Seriously!

Even Uncle Collin was having a fun time!

Caleb sweetly sharing his post race ice cream with cousin Brynna...

Look at those ice cream licking cousins all lined up:
Caden 6, Adalyn 4, Brynna 2 (almost 3), Caleb 4, Cole 2, Collin 34 :)

We got to see some cool show livestock

And the petting zoo

And there was a band and some impromptu Bartley dancing

What a fun trip! We love you cousins!
Austin Rodeo Rumble review- two thumbs up!

Cole is 2!!!

Look who turned 2 a few weekends ago!!

 There were cupcakes...

 And presents...

Note to moms of almost 2 year olds: the .99 chalk was the favorite gift...

 brothers helped celebrate...

in classic "I'm two" fashion we see a lot of this face lately...

...but the best part of two is that on a good day, if I really try to imagine it, he still feels like a baby...
:)

San Francisco

When we found out that Collin had to go to training in Palo Alto a few months back, it was pretty exciting! Hurray weekend away with half our expenses paid!

By the way, its no big secret why everything is soo expensive out there. Its soo beautiful. 20 minutes one way is the expansive cliffside ocean, bordered 5 minutes the other direction by beautiful tree lined mountains, bordered another way by beautiful San Francisco, and giant redwood forests north of that, wine country another direction...its ridiculous...and fun to visit :)
Overly excited tourist taking pictures out the car window because the view is so pretty

On the ferry to Alcatraz, this tour was a favorite part of our trip

the views from inside

Collin loved the homeplate in the "rec" yard. Don't be jealous, if you could see the size of these guys cells the other 98% of the time you wouldn't think a baseball diamond much at all

Three stories of rows and rows of tiny cells

the door to a solitary confinement cell, wow

obviously not capturing the feeling of the true inmate...we were soo happy to be on a trip

on the trail around the back of the island

Collin has a "thing" for bird pictures

later that day touristing "North Beach", lunch at a delicious "Diner Drive Ins and Dives" approved deli

Ok, china town is ridiculous. Its crazy that one block you are walking past an Italian deli and you cross the street into hurds and hurds of Asian residents. All of a sudden. out of nowhere. its crazy

Lombard street, the curvy one, pretty cool!

The next morning we went to check out the waves at Maverick Point where they hold international surfing competitions

We climbed rocks to get to this point so there weren't many people around except these two "surfer dudes". While Collin was exploring I asked them if it was safe to be where we were. He says, "Are you from the ocean?" (Like the little mermaid or something) But I play it cool and say no. He says, "Well, do your thing, buy ya'll should be careful of rouge waves. They can come out of no where and knock people into the surf and down there the tide is pretty crazy..." I'm like ok, alright. Play it cool...
"Collin, its time to come back..."

Crazy surfer headed out to a rock lined shore to paddle farther than I can see out the the giant, man crushing waves...impressive

Speaking of brave, I had to hoist myself over a large hole to get to where Collin was..it does not look anywhere near as dumb of an idea as it felt at that exact moment.

See, we didn't forget them in all the vacationing ;)

Later that morning we drove an hour north to check out Muir Woods forest. Well worth the trip!

And then back to the beach for one more glimpse on our last day...

These waves are huge in person, not nearly as impressive on the computer screen :(

Sunset on our last night

Goodbye California, if only we knew we were coming home to a week of battling the flu we might have stayed another night :)
